West Bengal MP Haji Nurul Islam Passes Away at 61
Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, a Member of Parliament (MP) from Basirhat in West Bengal, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61. He had been battling cancer for a long time and died at his residence in North 24 Parganas district after his health deteriorated.
Condolences from Leaders
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow on social media, stating, “Sad to know of the demise of my valued colleague, our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He was a dedicated social worker in a remote Sundarban area, and he worked hard for the upliftment of poor people in a backward region. People of Basirhat will miss his leadership.”
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev also extended her condolences, saying, “I am extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam. My deepest condolences.”
TMC MLA and actor Madan Mitra shared his grief, describing Islam as a ‘great social worker.’ He said, “I felt really very sad to know about the sad demise of my fellow and our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He is really a great social worker as he knows the flavour of the soil. May his soul rest in peace. My sincere condolences.”
Political Career
Nurul Islam won the Basirhat seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha Election with over 3 lakh votes, defeating BJP’s Rekha Patra. He replaced the incumbent Nusrat Jahan in the 2024 election. He first became an MP from Basirhat in 2009, later contested from Jangipur in 2014 but lost. He then returned to state politics, winning twice from Haroa Assembly in 2016 and 2021.
