West Bengal MP Haji Nurul Islam Passes Away at 61

North 24 Parganas (West Bengal) [India], September 25: Haji Sheikh Nurul Islam, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP from Basirhat in West Bengal, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 61. Nurul Islam had been battling cancer for a long time and died at his residence in North 24 Parganas district after his health deteriorated this morning.

Condolences from Leaders

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her sorrow on social media, stating, “Sad to know of the demise of my valued colleague, our MP of Basirhat, Haji Sk. Nurul Islam. He was a dedicated social worker in a remote Sundarban area, and he worked hard for the upliftment of poor people in a backward region. People of Basirhat will miss his leadership.” She also extended her condolences to Nurul Islam’s family, friends, and colleagues.

TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev also extended her condolences on social media, saying, “I am extremely sorry to hear about the passing away of Member of Parliament Haji Nurul Islam. My deepest condolences.” TMC MLA and actor Madan Mitra shared his grief, describing Islam as a ‘great social worker’ and expressing his sincere condolences.

Political Career

During the Lok Sabha Election 2024, Nurul Islam won the Basirhat seat with over 3 lakh votes, defeating BJP’s Rekha Patra. He replaced the incumbent Nusrat Jahan in the 2024 election. Nurul Islam first became an MP from the Basirhat seat in 2009. He later contested from the Jangipur constituency in 2014 but lost. He then returned to state politics, winning twice from the Haroa Assembly in 2016 and 2021.
