West Bengal Junior Doctors Begin Hunger Strike for Justice

In Kolkata, West Bengal, junior doctors have initiated a hunger strike to demand justice for a tragic incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest follows the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, which has sparked outrage among the medical community.

Demands for Justice and Transparency

Doctor Sayantani, representing the West Bengal Junior Doctors Front, stated that they have been waiting for nearly two months for the government to address their demands. Despite repeated communications, including emails to the Chief Secretary, no resolution has been reached. The doctors are determined to seek justice for the victim, Abhaya, and prevent similar incidents in the future.

The doctors are also calling for increased transparency in hospital operations, particularly regarding bed availability and facilities for patients. To demonstrate their commitment to transparency, the hunger strike is being monitored via CCTV.

Government’s Response and Supreme Court Involvement

Parichay Panda, another protesting doctor, criticized the government’s failure to enhance hospital safety and security. The Supreme Court has requested a report from the National Task Force on safety issues following the incident. The court aims to develop an action plan to prevent gender-based violence and ensure a safe working environment for medical professionals.

Widespread Protests

The incident has led to widespread protests, including a torchlight procession by students and doctors from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital. Additionally, doctors from private hospitals in Kolkata have lit earthen lamps at Ganga Ghat as a mark of protest.
