West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose Welcomes Court’s Restraint on CM Mamata Banerjee’s Remarks

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has expressed his approval of the Calcutta High Court’s decision to prevent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee from making derogatory statements about him. In an interview, Bose emphasized the importance of mutual respect and urged an end to political hatred.

Justice Krishna Rao issued the interim order, which will be reviewed on August 14. The court stated that the Governor, as a constitutional authority, should not be subjected to personal attacks via social media. The court also noted that without the interim order, the Governor could suffer irreparable damage to his reputation.

On behalf of CM Banerjee, lawyer Sanjay Basu argued that her statements were not defamatory and were made to address the concerns of women in the state. He emphasized her right to freedom of speech and her responsibility to ensure women’s safety.

Meanwhile, a woman staff member of the West Bengal Raj Bhawan, who accused Governor Bose of sexual harassment, has approached the Supreme Court. She is challenging the Governor’s immunity under Article 361 of the Constitution, questioning whether such immunity should cover allegations of sexual harassment.
