West Bengal Government Criticized Over RG Kar Medical College Incident
Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, the lawyer for the victim’s family in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case, has accused the West Bengal government of trying to influence witnesses. He stated that the Chief Minister attempts to pay off victims’ families and witnesses, but the victim’s parents refused and authorized him to take the matter to court. The investigation has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which must submit its report to the court.
Bhattacharya also criticized the Kolkata police, saying their actions were unsatisfactory and that the Police Commissioner failed to control the situation. The Supreme Court has taken notice of the case, and a bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud will hear it on August 20.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose condemned the state government, stating that Bengal is unsafe for women and that the government has failed to protect them. He plans to meet Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also criticized the government, highlighting a notification that suggests women are not safe at night and should not go out even during the day.
The incident, which occurred on August 9, involved the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. This has led to nationwide protests by civil societies and doctors, demanding severe punishment for the accused and better safety measures.
The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to take over the investigation, expressing dissatisfaction with the Kolkata Police’s handling of the case.
