West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Protesting Doctors Clash Over Meeting
Despite the Supreme Court’s order to resume work by 5 pm on Tuesday, the protesting doctors in West Bengal remained defiant. The state government sent a letter inviting them for a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the state secretariat. However, no doctors attended the meeting.
West Bengal Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya stated that CM Mamata waited for the doctors to come and talk to her, but no one arrived. The government had sent an email inviting 10 representatives to meet with the CM, but the doctors did not respond.
The protesting doctors insisted that their demands were clear and they would not go anywhere else. They have been protesting for 31 days and questioned why they were being called to a different location.
The Supreme Court reminded that no action should be taken against doctors if they return to work by 5 PM the next day. However, failure to do so could lead to disciplinary action. The court also directed that necessary safety and security measures be implemented in hospitals, including toilet facilities for both males and females.
Chief Justice of India Chandrachud directed the CBI to submit an updated status report by next week, and the court will review the matter on Tuesday, September 17.
