West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Supports Central Government Amid Bangladesh Crisis

On August 5, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the situation in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister reportedly fled due to ongoing violence. Banerjee stated that West Bengal will support any decision made by the central government and urged people to maintain peace and ignore rumors.

Appeal for Peace

Mamata Banerjee emphasized the importance of peace, saying, “I would appeal to the people of Bengal to maintain peace. Do not pay attention to any kind of rumours. This is a matter between two countries, we will support whatever decision the central government takes.” She also requested political leaders to avoid making provocative comments that could disrupt peace.

BJP’s Stance

BJP leader Locket Chatterjee mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might intervene if necessary. She highlighted the cultural and linguistic ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh and expressed hope for a quick return to normalcy.

Security Measures

Indian security agencies monitored a C-130 Aircraft, believed to be carrying Sheikh Hasina and her entourage, as it approached Delhi. The aircraft was tracked near the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border and was expected to land in Delhi around 5 PM.

Protests in Bangladesh

In Dhaka, protests and celebrations erupted following reports of Sheikh Hasina’s resignation. Protesters set fire to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum and the Dhaka district office of the Awami League. The fire spread to a nearby gas cylinder shop, and many people entered the Prime Minister’s official residence, Ganabhaban, chanting slogans.

Army’s Role

Bangladesh’s Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman confirmed Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and announced the formation of an interim government. He urged people to maintain peace and trust the army, stating, “Maintain peace and order in the country. You trust me, let’s work together. Please help, we won’t get anything by fighting. Avoid conflict. We have built a beautiful country together.”

General Waqar-uz-Zaman met with representatives from various political parties, including the BNP, Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami, to discuss the interim government.
