On Thursday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised concerns about passenger safety following the derailment of the Dibrugarh Express train in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda. The accident resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to 31 others.

The derailment occurred near Gonda station between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations at around 2:37 am. Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured. She questioned the Central government and railway authorities about their efforts to ensure passenger safety.

After the incident, medical teams and senior officials from the Lucknow division of North Eastern Railway rushed to the site to begin rescue operations. Pankaj Singh, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Railway, stated that a medical van had reached the spot and helpline numbers were issued for assistance. The helpline numbers are 8957409292 for Lucknow and 8957400965 for Gonda.

Uttar Pradesh’s Relief Commissioner reported that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Lucknow and Balrampur were dispatched to Gonda, and five ambulances were deployed for rescue operations. Additional ambulances were also sent to the site, and injured passengers were being transported to hospitals.

The Ministry of Railways announced financial compensation for the victims: Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakh for those with serious injuries, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries. A high-level inquiry, in addition to the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) inquiry, has been ordered to investigate the cause of the derailment.
