WCA Chair Heath Mills Leads Review to Fix Cricket’s Busy Schedule
The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has started a major review of the global cricket structure to address the crowded and fragmented cricket calendar. This review aims to find sustainable solutions for international cricket and domestic leagues to coexist better.
The WCA represents 16 player associations from countries like Australia, England, New Zealand, and South Africa. However, India and Pakistan are not part of the WCA as they do not have player associations for active players.
WCA Chair Heath Mills emphasized the need for this review, pointing out the lack of progress by cricket’s governing bodies in creating a clear structure for the sport. Mills mentioned that players are frustrated and have almost lost hope that the current leadership will resolve the scheduling issues.
The review is driven by the players, who want a say in the future of cricket. They are particularly worried about the unsustainable scheduling model that forces them to choose between national duty and domestic T20 leagues. One suggested solution, supported by 84% of the players, is to create specific windows in the calendar for both international and domestic cricket.
The review is led by a six-member group chaired by Paul Marsh, former head of the Australian Cricketers’ Association. The group includes notable figures like former Pakistan women’s team captain Sana Mir, ex-FICA chief Tony Irish, former ECB CEO Tom Harrison, and Sanjog Gupta, Head of Sports at Disney Star. They will consult with players, administrators, and franchise owners before making recommendations.
The group’s focus will be on three main issues: the current scheduling model, economic disparities between cricket boards, and player contracts. Mills described the scheduling model as ‘broken and unsustainable,’ with players often caught between national and domestic commitments.
The review will also address the economic imbalance between wealthy and smaller cricket boards and the challenges of player contracts due to the lack of a clear global calendar. Mills stressed the need for change to provide clarity and value for players, boards, and fans.
The recommendations from this review are expected by the end of the year, although the timeline is flexible to ensure a thorough process.
