On October 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke about the special relationship between Russia and China during a press briefing before the BRICS Summit. He described the relationship as “unique” and “confidential,” emphasizing the booming trade between the two nations. Putin noted that their cooperation on the international stage is crucial for global strategic stability.
Putin highlighted that Russia and China’s relationship is based on mutual interests. He mentioned past discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping about balancing trade and boosting Russian industrial exports to China. The two countries also collaborate on energy and space exploration, ensuring they listen to each other’s needs.
Putin stressed that there is no hierarchy in their relationship, and both nations work to promote each other’s benefits. He stated, “We are not just talking, we are doing. There are no seniors or juniors, we just work to promote each other’s benefit and we are successful.”
BRICS Background
The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, began after a meeting in St. Petersburg in 2006. The first BRIC Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, in 2009, and South Africa joined in 2010. Recently, BRICS expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates in 2024. To date, 15 BRICS Summits have been held.
