Anand will continue as the Icon Player for the Ganges Grandmasters this season. He will compete against renowned players such as Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, Anish Giri, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Ian Nepomniachtchi. He mentioned that the teams have strengthened their compositions, making the second season even more competitive.
The Global Chess League, which started last year, features a unique team format with six teams, each consisting of one Icon player, two superstar male players, two superstar female players, and one prodigy. Anand explained that this format adds responsibility and motivation for players to perform well, as their results impact the entire team.
Anand also noted that the first season captured the imaginations of the global chess community due to its fan-centric approach, including visual effects, commentary, and scoring. He believes the league is a great opportunity to attract new fans to the sport.
