Violence in Tonk: Ashok Gehlot Criticizes BJP Government
In Mumbai, Maharashtra, former Rajasthan Chief Minister and Congress leader Ashok Gehlot expressed his concerns over the violence in Tonk, calling it “unfortunate” and a blow to the BJP government’s credibility. Gehlot emphasized the need to condemn the incident, which involved an attack on a government official, highlighting the worrying atmosphere in Rajasthan.
The violence erupted when Naresha Meena, an independent candidate from Deoli Uniara, allegedly slapped Malpura Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Amit Chaudhary at a polling booth in Samravata village. Ajmer Inspector General (IG) Om Prakash reported that Meena and others involved were arrested, restoring peace in the district. A case was filed under sections of attempt to murder and destruction of public property, with about 60 arrests made.
Tonk Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Sangwan noted that Meena’s supporters set fire to the state highway outside Samravata village after his arrest. Meena was advised to surrender peacefully, and upon seeing the police force, he complied. He faces charges under relevant sections, and older records will be reviewed for further arrests.
