Violence in Bangladesh: 135 Killed Amid Protests, PM Sheikh Hasina Resigns
On Monday, Bangladesh experienced severe unrest, resulting in the deaths of at least 135 people. The violence included police firings, mob beatings, and arson across the country.
Clashes and Casualties
According to reports, 96 people were killed in police firings during clashes between demonstrators and members of the Awami League. In the Savar and Dhamrai regions, 18 people were killed, and 50 others were injured as police used tear gas and bullets. Multiple journalists were also among those shot.
In the capital’s Uttara area, 10 people were killed when individuals in civilian clothes opened fire on protesters. In response, enraged people set the Uttara East police station on fire.
Hospital Reports
Dhaka Medical College Hospital received 37 dead bodies from 11 am to 8 pm on Monday. Additionally, 500 injured people, including 70 with gunshot wounds, were brought to the hospital.
Further Incidents
In Sreepur, Gazipur, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel opened fire on miscreants blocking BGB trucks, injuring six people. Meanwhile, in Chittagong, people celebrated after reports surfaced that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had left Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned amid the mounting protests, which were initially driven by students demanding an end to a government job quota system. She arrived in India on Monday evening. An interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus has been proposed by student leaders Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, and Abu Bakar Mazumdar. President Mohammed Shahabuddin has approved the formation of this interim government.
