Vinesh Phogat Shines at Paris Olympics, One Win Away from Medal
Legendary Indian wrestler Mahavir Phogat is hopeful that his niece, Vinesh Phogat, will win a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Vinesh advanced to the semifinals in the women’s 50 kg freestyle category after defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach.
Vinesh secured a 7-5 victory over Oksana and is now just one win away from a confirmed medal. Mahavir Phogat expressed his confidence, saying, “The country had great expectations from her during the 2016 and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. But this time, I am very confident that Vinesh will fulfill my dream of a gold medal. She defeated a top Japanese wrestler in the first round.”
In the quarterfinals, Vinesh took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Although Oksana fought back in the second period, Vinesh held off the challenge to secure her semifinal berth. Her next opponent will be either Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez or Lithuania’s Gabija Dilyte.
Vinesh started her Paris Olympics campaign brilliantly by defeating the top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the round of 16. Despite trailing 1-0 at the end of the first period, Vinesh made a remarkable comeback to win 3-2.
Meanwhile, Nisha Dahiya’s Paris Olympics campaign ended in the quarterfinals after losing to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum. Nisha was leading 8-2 but faced an injury, allowing Sol Gum to make a comeback and win the match. Nisha had previously defeated Tetiana Sova in the round of 16.
