Vinesh Phogat Reaches Semifinals at Paris Olympics
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has made it to the semifinals of the women’s 50 kg freestyle category at the ongoing Paris Olympics. She secured a win in the quarterfinals over Ukraine’s Oksana Livach with a score of 7-5 on Tuesday.
In the quarterfinals, Vinesh took an early lead of 2-0 in the first period. Although Oksana fought back in the second period, Vinesh, a World Championships medalist, held off the challenge to secure her spot in the semifinals.
Vinesh’s next opponent will be either Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, a Pan American Games champion, or Gabija Dilyte of Lithuania. The semifinals are scheduled to start at 10:25 PM IST.
Earlier in the competition, Vinesh delivered a brilliant performance by defeating the top seed and Tokyo 2020 champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the round of 16. Despite Susaki leading 1-0 at the end of the first period, Vinesh made a remarkable comeback in the second period to win 3-2.
Nisha Dahiya’s Campaign Ends
In contrast, Nisha Dahiya’s Paris Olympics campaign ended in the quarterfinals of the women’s 68 kg category. She lost to North Korea’s Pak Sol Gum with a score of 8-10 on Monday. Nisha was leading 8-2 at one point but faced an injury, allowing Sol Gum to make a comeback and win the match.
In the round of 16, Nisha had defeated Tetiana Sova 6-4 at the Champs de Mars Arena, marking her debut Olympics appearance.
