Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg event at the Paris Olympics for being 100 grams over the weight limit. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment at the decision.

PT Usha assured that the IOA and the Government of India will provide complete support to Vinesh. She mentioned that the Wrestling Federation of India has filed an appeal to the United World Wrestling (UWW) to reconsider the decision.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala explained the weight-cutting process and the measures taken to help Vinesh meet the weight requirements. Despite these efforts, Vinesh was found to be slightly over the limit and was disqualified. Dr. Pardiwala confirmed that Vinesh was given IV fluids to prevent dehydration and that her health parameters were normal.

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the government has provided every facility to support Vinesh’s preparation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also spoke to PT Usha, urging necessary action. The Indian Olympic contingent requested respect for Vinesh’s privacy and focus on ongoing competitions.

Vinesh had reached the final after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez. Another Indian wrestler, Antim Panghal, also faced a disappointing loss in her round of 16 bout.
