Paris [France], August 7: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics due to being slightly overweight. Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh expressed his sadness, stating, “It is extremely sad for the country that we missed our first gold medal in Women’s Wrestling because of the overweight issue.”

Vinesh was set to compete against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match. Despite training all night to reduce her weight, she was a few grams over the 50kg limit. Sanjay Singh assured that the WFI would do whatever is possible to support her.

Earlier, the Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement confirming her disqualification and requested respect for Vinesh’s privacy. Vinesh had reached the final after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.

India remains hopeful for more medals, with athletes like Avinash Sable competing in the 3000m steeplechase final, Mirabai Chanu in the Women’s 49kg weightlifting category, and Antim Panghal in the Women’s Freestyle 53kg wrestling category.
