Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced a major setback when she was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling final at the Paris Olympics for being overweight by 100 grams. She was set to compete against the United States’ Sarah Ann Hildebrandt for the gold medal.

Support from Political Leaders

Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his support, stating, “Vinesh Phogat’s setback in the Olympics has certainly broken the hopes of millions of Indians. She has a brilliant sporting career, shining with the glory of defeating the world champion.”

Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh called the disqualification “unfortunate” and mentioned that Vinesh’s weight had been constant for two days before increasing overnight. He added that the WFI is looking into the legal procedures.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised Vinesh’s performance, saying, “Your excellent performance in the Paris Olympics 2024 has illuminated India. The whole country stands with you.”

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari also expressed their pride and called for a review of the disqualification decision.

Calls for Review

NCP MP Praful Patel and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi urged the Indian Olympic Association to challenge the disqualification. Gandhi stated, “We have full hope that the Indian Olympic Association will strongly challenge this decision and provide justice to the daughter of the country.”

Former Indian cricketer and AAP MP Harbhajan Singh expressed his disappointment, saying, “It is very unfortunate because Vinesh was so close to getting a gold medal. For me, she is a winner.”
