Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], August 7: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat faced a major setback at the Paris Olympics when she was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling final for exceeding the weight limit.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin consoled Vinesh, saying, “Though you missed a medal, you’ve won the hearts of everyone with your incredible determination.” He praised her resilience and strength, calling her a true champion.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his support, stating, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts, but I know you will come back stronger.”

Vinesh was set to compete against the United States’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match. Despite the disqualification, her journey to the finals, including a victory over Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez, has inspired many.

The Indian Olympic Association is exploring options to address the disqualification, with PM Modi urging IOA President PT Usha to file a strong protest if it helps Vinesh’s case.

The Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement requesting respect for Vinesh’s privacy and focusing on the ongoing competitions.
