New Delhi, August 7 – Vinesh Phogat, an Indian wrestler, was disqualified from the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. She was set to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the United States but was disqualified for exceeding the 50kg weight limit.

Support from Indian Authorities

Adille Sumariwalla, President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), stated that every effort was made to support Vinesh. He emphasized that it would be wrong to politicize the issue. Sumariwalla mentioned that the Prime Minister had intervened to explore all legal options to support Vinesh.

Efforts to Meet Weight Requirements

Sumariwalla explained that Vinesh had made the initial weigh-in but gained weight after eating and drinking to regain energy for her bouts. Despite efforts, including running and even cutting her hair, she was still overweight during the final weigh-in. The Indian medical team worked overnight to help her, but she became dehydrated and needed treatment.

Political Reactions

Various political leaders expressed their disappointment. Rashtriya Loktantrik Party MP Hanuman Beniwal questioned the government’s international relations, while Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal suggested a conspiracy. The Prime Minister also spoke to Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha for firsthand information.

PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment over Vinesh’s disqualification. She confirmed that Vinesh is physically and medically okay but mentally disappointed. The support staff is doing their best to help her.
