Vinesh Phogat Disqualified from Wrestling Event at Paris Olympics
Paris [France], August 7: In a significant setback for India’s wrestling hopes, Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event at the Paris Olympics. She was scheduled to face Sarah Ann Hildebrandt from the United States in the Gold Medal match.
A statement from the Indian Olympic contingent revealed that Phogat was disqualified for weighing above the 50 kg limit. The statement read, “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50 kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50 kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. Vinesh had reached the Gold Medal bout after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals on Tuesday night.
Other Indian Athletes in Action
India’s hopes now turn to the athletics arena. Avinash Sable will compete in the 3000 Metre Steeplechase final on Thursday at 1:13 AM Indian Standard Time (IST). Sable advanced to the final by finishing fifth in the preliminary round at the Stade de France, clocking 8:15.43s.
Additionally, Mirabai Chanu will compete in the Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting category tonight. Wrestler Antim Panghal will also be in action in the Women’s Freestyle 53 kg category Round of 16 later on Wednesday.
So far, India has won three medals at the Paris Olympics, all in shooting events.
