Villagers in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh, Forced to Demolish Homes Due to Saryu River Erosion
In Ballia District of Uttar Pradesh, the rising water levels of the Saryu River have caused significant river erosion near the banks. This has left villagers living on the riverbanks very scared and forced them to use chisels, hammers, and bulldozers to break down their homes and move away from the river.
Vishram Yadav, a resident of Bhojpurwa village, shared his fear of the erosion and explained that he was demolishing his house with a bulldozer to salvage useful debris. He mentioned that the government should have built a barrier earlier to prevent this erosion.
Haridwar Yadav, the village head, reported that around 1100 people in the village have been affected, with about 40 people demolishing their homes due to the erosion. The District Magistrate of Ballia, Praveen Kumar Lakshkar, visited the village to assess the situation and assured the villagers that appropriate steps would be taken to help them.
The District Magistrate also reported that approximately 80 to 100 meters of land have been eroded, resulting in 13 villagers losing their homes. Arrangements for food and accommodation are being made for the affected individuals, and appropriate compensation will be provided according to regulations.
