Vikramaditya Singh and Amit Shah Discuss New Criminal Laws in India

On July 1, new criminal laws were introduced in India, leading to a debate between Congress leader Vikramaditya Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Singh criticized the process, stating that the opposition was not consulted and that the laws were passed when 150 MPs were suspended. He urged for a detailed discussion in Parliament.

Shah defended the laws, stating that extensive discussions were held in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He emphasized that the laws were debated for over four years and that police personnel are being trained for their implementation.

Details of the New Laws

The new laws are:

  • Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita: 358 sections, 20 new crimes, increased fines and sentences.
  • Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita: 531 sections, 177 changes, new provisions, and timelines.
  • Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam: 170 provisions, new and changed provisions.

These laws were approved by Parliament on December 21, 2023, and received the President’s assent on December 25, 2023. They aim to modernize India’s criminal justice system.
