Vikram Misri Becomes New Foreign Secretary of India

On July 15, 2024, Vikram Misri assumed the role of Foreign Secretary of India, succeeding Vinay Mohan Kwatra. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar congratulated Misri and wished him a successful tenure.

Jaishankar’s Congratulatory Message

In a post on X, Jaishankar said, “Congratulate Foreign Secretary @VikramMisri as he assumes his new responsibility today. Wish him a productive and successful tenure.”

Ministry of External Affairs’ Warm Welcome

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also extended their best wishes to Misri. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on X, “Shri Vikram Misri assumed charge as Foreign Secretary today. #TeamMEA extends a warm welcome to Foreign Secretary Misri and wishes him a successful tenure ahead.”

Approval by Appointments Committee of Cabinet

The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) approved the proposal for Misri’s appointment, following the Ministry of External Affairs’ recommendation.

Farewell to Vinay Mohan Kwatra

On July 14, 2024, Jaishankar bid farewell to outgoing Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra, acknowledging his significant contributions to India’s foreign policy and national security over the past decade. Jaishankar praised Kwatra for his strategic acumen in shaping and executing crucial policies during his tenure.

Misri’s Distinguished Career

Vikram Misri, 59, has served as private secretary to three Prime Ministers – Inder Kumar Gujral, Manmohan Singh, and Narendra Modi. He was also India’s ambassador to China and played a key role in discussions following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
