Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Urges Rajya Sabha Members to Reflect and Unite
New Delhi, India – August 9: The Rajya Sabha experienced repeated adjournments due to a tense situation when opposition members walked out following a heated exchange with Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar over BJP MP Ghanshyam Tiwari’s remarks against Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge.
Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his disappointment over the use of intemperate language and urged members to reflect on their duties under the constitution. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the dignity of the Rajya Sabha and called for bipartisan cooperation on issues of national importance.
Dhankhar stated, “I would urge each one of you also to please reach out, the Members of this House you can, so that we all in this House on some issues, issues of National importance, get bipartisan, rise above party interests, and send a message to the country and the world at large, that this country, having the most vibrant, functional democracy, a country that is the mother of democracy, a country that is the oldest and largest democracy, will continue to be hope for the entire world.”
Earlier, Congress MPs demanded an apology from Tiwari for his remarks made on August 1, but the Rajya Sabha chairman insisted that the issue was resolved privately with the leaders. The opposition also demanded to expunge Tiwari’s remarks about Kharge, while Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan commented on the tone of Chairman Dhankhar.
Dhankhar took strong exception to Jaya Bachchan’s remarks, stating he does not want schooling and that he has his own script. This led to the opposition members staging a walkout from the Rajya Sabha.
During the conclusion of the 265th Session of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar urged members who walked out to deeply reflect on their duties and prepare for constructive participation in future sessions. He emphasized the need for members to perform their constitutional duties and serve the people at large.
Dhankhar also noted that he observed the reactions of members on various TV channels during the adjournment and took care to ensure that their behavior did not undermine the dignity of the Parliament.
