New Delhi, August 8: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his sorrow over the death of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. He shared his condolences on social media, recalling the wise counsel he received from Bhattacharjee during his tenure as Governor of West Bengal.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, a member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), served as the 7th Chief Minister of West Bengal from 2000 to 2011. He succeeded Jyoti Basu and was the last CPI (M) leader to hold the position. In the 2011 assembly elections, his party lost to Mamata Banerjee’s TMC, ending a 34-year communist rule in the state.

Vice President Dhankhar extended his heartfelt condolences to Bhattacharjee’s family, praying for peace for the departed soul and strength for the bereaved family.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed her shock and sadness over Bhattacharjee’s passing. She shared her condolences with his family, recalling her visits to him during his illness.

Other leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, also mourned the loss of the former Chief Minister.

CPI (M) West Bengal State Secretary Md Salim highlighted Bhattacharjee’s contributions as a good administrator, honest person, and aggressive secular leader. The CPI (M) expressed profound grief, noting his long-standing dedication to the party and his significant role in shaping its policies.

Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee joined the CPI (M) in 1966 and held various important positions within the party. He was a poet, playwright, and writer, known for translating international literary works into Bengali and writing extensively on changes in China.

Bhattacharjee lived a simple life, residing in a modest two-room apartment throughout his tenure as Chief Minister and afterward. He passed away at the age of eighty in Kolkata due to old age-related ailments.
