Addressing Piracy in the Indian Ocean
Vice Admiral Aurelio De Carolis, the commander-in-chief of the Italian Fleet, has praised the Indian Navy for its outstanding performance in the Indian Ocean. During a press conference about the Italian Carrier Strike Group, he expressed concerns over the rising piracy threat in the region.
Reasons for Rising Piracy
De Carolis explained that piracy had decreased until two years ago but has resurged due to reduced commercial flow through the Red Sea, causing ships to divert to the Cape of Good Hope. He emphasized the Indian Navy’s crucial role in combating this issue, stating, “At the end of the day, it is called the Indian Ocean, not by chance.”
Strengthening Naval Ties
India and Italy have strengthened their naval ties through regular exchanges, joint exercises, and defense cooperation. In 2023, Italy joined the Indo-Pacific Ocean Initiative’s Science and Technology Pillar. The Italian Navy Ship ITS Morosini visited Mumbai in August 2023, and the Indian Navy Ship INS Sumedha conducted a Maritime PASSEX Exercise with ITS Morosini off Sardinia in April 2023. The Italian Navy also participated in the MILAN 2024 Naval Exercises off Vishakapatnam in February 2024.
