VD Satheesan Leads Protest in Kerala Over Justice Hema Committee Report
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), September 2: VD Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition in Kerala, led a protest in front of the Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram. He accused Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of protecting those named in the Justice Hema Committee report and the Vadakara Kafir Screenshot Case.
Satheesan stated, “Hema Committee Report is essentially a series of sexual offenses. Many sections of the report were removed because they contained the names of influential people. The Chief Minister has provided protection to the predators, leaving even the dignitaries in the film industry under a shadow of suspicion due to the government’s actions.”
Earlier, Union Minister JP Nadda criticized the Kerala government for delaying justice for victims of sexual harassment in the Malayalam film industry. The Justice Hema Committee report, made public last month, contains shocking accounts of harassment and exploitation faced by women professionals in the industry.
The 235-page report, published after redacting names, notes that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors. The report was submitted to the Kerala government in December 2019 but was made public only recently.
Following the report, actor Mohanlal resigned as the president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA). On August 25, the Kerala government announced the formation of a seven-member special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case.
