Uyghur American Leaders Urge Trump to Address Human Rights Violations in Xinjiang
Following Donald Trump’s election victory, Uyghur American leaders are calling for renewed focus on human rights abuses in Xinjiang, China. They urge Trump to continue his administration’s efforts, which previously classified China’s actions as genocide and imposed sanctions on Chinese officials. Nury Turkel, a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, emphasized the national security implications of Uyghur rights. He expressed hope that the Trump administration would intensify sanctions and address urgent issues.
Rushan Abbas, executive director of the Campaign for Uyghurs, highlighted the importance of enforcing the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act of 2021. He stressed that addressing the genocide is crucial to prevent U.S. complicity in forced labor. Salih Hudayar, prime minister of the East Turkistan Government in Exile, called for the recognition of Xinjiang as an occupied nation and the appointment of a special US coordinator for Uyghur issues.
Despite these calls, concerns remain that economic ties with China may overshadow human rights issues. Turkel noted that various advocacy groups influence the U.S. response, with some prioritizing economic and environmental collaboration with China. Uyghur leaders also urge action against China’s transnational repression, including covert operations targeting Uyghur Americans. Abbas called for efforts to secure the release of Uyghur detainees in China.
