Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami formally inaugurated the 22nd Uttarakhand State Junior and Senior Badminton Championship on Thursday. The event is being held at Parade Ground, Dehradun, from July 24 to July 28.

Encouragement and Achievements

Chief Minister Dhami met with the players and encouraged them, expressing his enthusiasm and energy. He highlighted Uttarakhand’s growing identity in badminton, mentioning players like Lakshya Sen who are making history.

Support for Sports

Dhami praised the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and initiatives like Khelo India, which have promoted sports on a large scale. He noted that India is sending its largest contingent to the Paris Olympics, with 117 athletes participating.

Incentives and Facilities

The state government is providing extensive support to athletes, including training camps, free education, medical and food facilities under the Residential Sports Hostel Scheme. Incentives of Rs 2 crore, 1.5 crore, and 1 crore are being given for Olympic medalists, and Rs 6 lakh, 4 lakh, and 3 lakh for National Games medalists.

New Sports Policy

A new sports policy has been implemented to promote sports and encourage players. This year, 31 medal-winning players have been given government appointments. The Mukhyamantri Udiyaman Khiladi Unnayan Yojana provides scholarships of Rs 1500 per month to 3,900 players aged 8 to 14. The daily allowance for players in sports hostels has been increased from Rs 175 to Rs 225. Additionally, Rs 10 crore has been allocated for open gyms at the rural level.

Uttarakhand is also set to organize the upcoming National Games, which is a significant opportunity for the state.
