Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Introduces Uniform Civil Code

On October 23, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami led a cabinet meeting in Dehradun to discuss the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). During the meeting, CM Dhami’s Secretary, Shailesh Bagauli, announced that the UCC manual has been sent to the Legislative Department for training.

Earlier, on October 18, Shatrughan Singh, Chairman of the Uniform Civil Code Committee, submitted the final report to CM Dhami. The Chief Minister emphasized that introducing the UCC was a top priority for his government. He credited the people of Uttarakhand for their support and trust.

The UCC committee, led by Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, submitted its report, and the bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly on February 7, 2024. It received presidential approval on March 12, becoming law.

The UCC manual is divided into four sections, and a mobile app has been developed for public queries. CM Dhami clarified that the UCC aims to ensure equal laws for everyone, not targeting any community.

The Uttarakhand UCC bill covers laws on marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. It mandates registration of live-in relationships, bans child marriage, and establishes a uniform divorce process. Women of all religions are granted equal rights to ancestral property. The minimum marriage age is set at 18 for women and 21 for men, with compulsory marriage registration for all religions. Marriages without registration are invalid, and no divorce can be filed within one year of marriage.
