Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Welcomes Renaming of Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram
Dehradun (Uttarakhand) [India], September 13: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has expressed his support for the central government’s decision to rename Port Blair, the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, to ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’.
In a post on X, CM Dhami stated that the renaming aims to highlight the historical significance of the Union Territory and praised the efforts to remove symbols of colonialism. He said, “The decision of the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to change the name of Port Blair to ‘Sri Vijaya Puram’ is extremely welcome. The naming of Sri Vijayapuram is dedicated to highlighting the historical importance and glorious traditions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The efforts to free the country from the symbols of slavery is commendable.”
CM Dhami also mentioned that the area has witnessed significant historical events, including the hoisting of the tricolour flag by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the struggles of Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also announced the renaming through a post on X, emphasizing that the move is inspired by PM Modi’s vision to eliminate colonial imprints. Shah highlighted the unique role of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India’s freedom struggle and history. He wrote, “While the earlier name had a colonial legacy, Sri Vijaya Puram symbolises the victory achieved in our freedom struggle and the A&N Islands’ unique role in the same.”
Shah added that the island territory, which once served as the naval base of the Chola Empire, is now poised to be a critical base for India’s strategic and development aspirations. It is also the place where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose first unfurled the Tiranga and where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters were imprisoned in the cellular jail.
