Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami Celebrates Himalaya Day, Calls for Conservation Efforts
Dehradun (Uttarakhand), September 9: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami participated in an event at the Mukhya Sevak Sadan in the Chief Minister’s residence to mark ‘Himalaya Day’. He urged everyone to work together to protect the Himalayas from changing climate conditions.
According to an official release, CM Dhami announced the formation of a committee in coordination with Director General of Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST), Durgesh Pant, to address issues concerning the Himalayas.
CM Dhami emphasized the need for collective efforts to conserve the Himalayas, water, and forests. He noted the significant temperature rise in Dehradun and expressed concern for future generations. He also released a poster for the fifth Dehradun International Science and Technology Festival, which will be held in engineering colleges across six districts: Dehradun, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Tehri, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh.
CM Dhami wished everyone a Happy Himalaya Day and thanked those working for the conservation of the Himalayas. He announced that Bugyal Conservation Day will be celebrated annually on September 2. He highlighted the rapid climate changes and the importance of continuous efforts to save nature.
He mentioned past disasters and the successful rescue operation at the Silkyara Tunnel, which was supported by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. CM Dhami stressed the importance of celebrating Himalaya Day every day and the need for public participation in conservation efforts.
He also discussed the Gross Environment Product (GEP) index, which has been started in Uttarakhand, and the balance between ecology and economy in development works. He raised the issue of making a separate plan for the Himalayas in the NITI Aayog meeting, considering the floating population visiting Uttarakhand.
HESCO founder and Padma Bhushan awardee, Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi, praised CM Dhami’s initiatives for the Himalayas. He emphasized the need to bring all institutions working on Himalayan conservation together on one platform. Director General UCOST, Prof Durgesh Pant, mentioned that many programs were organized across the state during Himalaya Week to discuss conservation and promotion of the Himalayas.
