On a significant day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for renaming Sarai Kale Khan Chowk near Delhi’s ISBT terminal to Birsa Munda Chowk. CM Dhami called it a “proud day” for the nation.

Announcement by Union Minister

Union Minister of Urban Development Manohar Lal Khattar announced the renaming on the 150th birth anniversary of freedom fighter and tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda. He stated that the chowk’s new name and the statue of Birsa Munda would inspire both residents and visitors.

Honoring a Freedom Fighter

The decision aims to honor Birsa Munda, a key figure in India’s tribal freedom struggle. He led the “Ulgulan” movement against British rule, advocating for tribal rights and land reclamation. Birsa Munda, known as ‘Dharti Aba’ or ‘Father of the Earth,’ founded the Birsait faith and is celebrated for his leadership.

Commemorative Events

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, along with Manohar Lal Khattar and Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, unveiled a statue of Birsa Munda in Delhi to mark his birth anniversary. In 2021, the Central Government declared November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’ in his honor.
