On Sunday, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be implemented in the state before State Foundation Day on November 9. The UCC Bill was introduced on February 6 and passed in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 7, marking a historic day for the state.

The UCC Bill aims to establish uniform rules for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and property rights for all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, or sexual orientation. On March 13, President Droupadi Murmu approved the bill, making Uttarakhand the first state in India to implement the UCC.

Chief Minister Dhami also spoke about the state’s efforts to balance development and the environment. He mentioned the creation of the Gross Environment Product (GEP) index, which incorporates water, land, forest, and air. The carrying capacity of cities in the hilly areas is being assessed for planned development according to their capacity.
