US to Monitor China-Russia Military Drills in Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk
The United States will keep an eye on joint military exercises by China and Russia in the Sea of Japan and Sea of Okhotsk. However, there is no immediate concern, according to John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman.
Monitoring the Drills
John Kirby mentioned at a press briefing that the US will watch these naval and air exercises like any other drills. He noted that China and Russia do not have a long history of working closely together militarily. Kirby said, “We’ve been watching this defense relationship grow and deepen over the last couple of years to include the exercise of their militaries in both the air, at sea, and even on the ground.”
China and Russia’s Military Cooperation
China’s Ministry of National Defence announced that the drills, named Northern/Interaction-2024, aim to deepen strategic cooperation and strengthen their ability to respond to security threats. The Chinese and Russian naval fleets will conduct their fifth joint maritime patrol in the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, the Chinese navy will participate in Russia’s “Ocean-2024” strategic exercise.
Previous Exercises
In July, China and Russia conducted a joint military exercise in the waters and airspace near Zhanjiang, in south China’s Guangdong Province. This included anti-missile exercises, sea strikes, and air defense. The Chinese and Russian naval forces also carried out on-map military simulation and tactical coordination exercises.
