US Senators Introduce Bill to Support Taiwan and Counter China
US Republican senators have introduced a new bill called the STRATEGIC Act to help the US compete against China and support Taiwan. Senator Todd Young said the bill aims to counter the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to undermine security in the Indo-Pacific region. The bill includes several important initiatives to strengthen American supply chains and support Taiwan.
Senator Dan Sullivan mentioned that the bill aims to protect the interests of the US and its allies in the Indo-Pacific region while pushing back against China’s growing influence. The act includes measures like antitrust reform to target China’s economic behavior and provisions to enhance US support for Taiwan.
A key part of the bill is the creation of a ‘Tiger Team’ within the State and Treasury departments. This team will identify targets for sanctions and other economic measures before China takes military action against Taiwan. The bill also proposes treating Taiwan’s government as the legitimate representative of its people and removing restrictions on interactions between US and Taiwanese officials.
Additionally, the bill suggests transferring obsolete or surplus items to Taiwan for reserve stock. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence reported that seven Chinese military aircraft and six naval vessels were detected around Taiwan. Five of these aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, entering Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. In response, Taiwan dispatched aircraft, naval vessels, and coastal-based missile systems to monitor the activities.
