US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, met with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Blinken emphasized the importance of avoiding further escalation and achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.

During the meeting, Blinken highlighted efforts to secure the release of hostages and alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people. He also stressed the need to protect humanitarian workers and deliver assistance in coordination with the United Nations.

Blinken updated Gallant on diplomatic efforts to advance security, governance, and reconstruction in Gaza, emphasizing the importance of this work for Israel’s security. He reaffirmed the United States’ strong commitment to Israel’s security.

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have increased since the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. The militant group Hezbollah has been firing missiles, mortars, and drones into Israel, with Israel responding in kind. Many people on both sides of the border have fled due to fears of a full-scale war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel is prepared to pause the ongoing fight in exchange for a partial deal to return hostages from Gaza. However, he emphasized that the war will not end until Hamas is destroyed. Netanyahu also mentioned that Israel is preparing for a possible all-out war with Hezbollah.
