US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken Warns China Over Taiwan Tensions

In Vientiane, Laos, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken cautioned China against any “provocative” actions towards Taiwan. This warning followed a speech by Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te on Double Ten National Day, where he vowed to “resist annexation.” Blinken emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and highlighted the global economic significance of Taiwan, noting that 50% of commercial container traffic and over 70% of high-end semiconductors are linked to Taiwan.

During an ASEAN East Asia Summit, Blinken addressed various issues, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict, while stressing the importance of US-ASEAN collaborations. He reiterated President Biden’s message about the Indo-Pacific’s future significance. Blinken warned China against using military exercises as a pretext for aggressive actions and stressed the need to preserve the status quo for regional peace and stability.

China has increased military threats against Taiwan, with 20 Chinese military aircraft and 10 naval vessels detected around Taiwan. Thirteen aircraft crossed into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Mao Ning reiterated China’s “one China” principle, rejecting Taiwan’s claims of independence.
