US Secretary Blinken Meets Maldivian Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer to Strengthen Ties

Washington, DC [US], June 26: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer in Washington, DC. The meeting aimed to enhance cooperation on climate, economic growth, and maritime security between the two countries.

According to the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions focused on deepening relations in defense and security cooperation, promoting democracy, economic growth, and adapting to climate change.

In a post on X, Blinken shared a picture with Zameer and said, “Met with Maldivian Foreign Minister @MoosaZameer to enhance the U.S.-Maldives partnership and cooperation on climate, economic growth, and maritime security.”

Moosa Zameer also expressed his delight on X, stating, “I reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthen the partnership between the Maldives and US in tackling climate change, promoting democracy, and cooperation in maritime security.”

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to exploring new avenues to strengthen the partnership, upholding a rules-based international order, and promoting regional stability and peace. Blinken congratulated the Maldives on successful elections and acknowledged its leadership in combating climate change.

Minister Zameer highlighted the importance of educational opportunities offered by the US and noted that easier visa facilitation for Maldivians would promote cultural exchange, tourism, and business ties.

The meeting was attended by Maldivian officials, including Ambassador Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, Secretary Bilateral Dr. Hala Hameed, Senior Undersecretary Hassan Hussain Shihab, Counsellor Zeena Didi, and Second Secretary Ibrahim Haail.
