Washington [US], November 19: The US State Department addressed Bangladesh's Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman's proposal to remove secularism from the Constitution. This comes as tensions rise following attacks on religious minorities in Chittagong. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, "I'll take that back and see if we have anything to say about it," when asked about the proposal.
The US clarified its opposition to government involvement in violent crackdowns on peaceful protests in Bangladesh. This follows clashes in Chittagong between the Hindu community and law enforcement, sparked by a social media post criticizing ISKCON. Miller emphasized, "We support the right to peaceful protest and that no government should engage in violent crackdowns on peaceful demonstrations."
The Chittagong clash led to joint police and army operations, with blank shots fired. India condemned the November 6 attacks on the Hindu community. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal urged Bangladesh to act decisively against extremist elements.
Earlier, Attorney General Asaduzzaman called for constitutional changes, suggesting the removal of secularism, socialism, and Bengali nationalism. He criticized the 15th Amendment, labeling it a betrayal of the Liberation War and the 2024 July revolution. Asaduzzaman argued for reinstating referendums and criticized the use of language as a basis for national identity.
