US Praises India’s Leadership in Quad, PM Modi to Attend Summit in Delaware
The United States has praised India’s leadership role in the Quad, a diplomatic partnership between Australia, India, Japan, and the US. Mira Rapp-Hooper, Senior Director for East Asia and Oceania at the US National Security Council, emphasized India’s importance in the Indo-Pacific strategy during a press briefing.
Rapp-Hooper stated, “We expect and indeed see India as a leader within the Quad. The United States seeks an India that is increasingly a leader in the region and increasingly partnered with the United States.” She added that the Quad allows for critical exchanges of strategic views and identifies opportunities that matter to all member countries, especially India.
This year’s Quad Summit was initially scheduled to be held in India. However, due to scheduling conflicts among the leaders, the venue was changed to the United States. Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to swap host years with the US, and India will now host the Quad Summit in 2025.
PM Modi will attend the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden on September 21. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri mentioned that this visit would provide an opportunity for substantive engagement between PM Modi and President Biden, reviewing the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the US. The summit will also serve as a farewell event for President Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida, allowing PM Modi to thank them for their leadership in the Quad partnership.
Misri also noted that bilateral meetings with the leaders of Japan and Australia are expected during the summit.
