US Lawmakers Criticize South Africa’s Decision on Taiwan’s Office
Recently, US senators and representatives expressed disapproval of South Africa’s decision to relocate Taiwan’s representative office from Pretoria to Johannesburg. This move was seen as yielding to China’s demands. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul urged South Africa to reconsider its relationship with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and maintain nonalignment. He described the decision as a result of CCP coercion.
Senator Marsha Blackburn also criticized South Africa’s actions, urging the US government to impose consequences if Pretoria continues to collaborate with the CCP against Taiwan. Senator Tom Cotton echoed these concerns, calling the actions “deeply disturbing.” Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lin Chia-lung, stated there are no plans to relocate the office, deeming the demands unreasonable.
US Representative Michelle Steel called for South Africa to reverse its decision and respect Taiwan. South Africa had given Taiwan a six-month period to relocate, citing diplomatic customs since severing official ties in 1997. This is not the first instance of such a request; Nigeria made a similar demand in 2017, likely under Chinese pressure.
China has become Africa’s largest trade partner, investing heavily across the continent through initiatives like Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative. In September, Xi promised USD 51 billion in funding for Africa.
