US House Supports Democracy and Human Rights in Pakistan
The US House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution on Wednesday, supporting democracy and human rights in Pakistan. The resolution calls for a thorough and independent investigation into interference claims in Pakistan’s 2024 elections.
Resolution Details
The resolution, HR 901, titled ‘Expressing support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan,’ was introduced by Congressman McCormick of Georgia and Congressman Kildee of Michigan. It was co-sponsored by over 100 colleagues and passed with 98% of votes in favor.
The resolution urges US President Joe Biden to collaborate with Pakistan in upholding democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. It emphasizes the importance of free and fair elections and condemns efforts to suppress democratic participation, including harassment, intimidation, violence, arbitrary detention, and internet restrictions.
Reactions from Pakistan
Pakistan’s Foreign Office responded by stating that the resolution stemmed from an incomplete understanding of the country’s political situation and electoral process. They emphasized their commitment to constitutionalism, human rights, and the rule of law, and called for constructive dialogue and engagement based on mutual respect.
Background
The general elections in Pakistan, held on February 8, were marred by allegations of irregularities, including internet shutdowns, rigging, and violence. Former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, opposed the results, citing irregularities. Despite these challenges, Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan Peoples Party formed a coalition government with Shehbaz Sharif as the Prime Minister.
