US Deports Indian Nationals: DHS Highlights Cooperation with India
The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has confirmed the deportation of several Indian nationals who were staying illegally in the United States. Although the exact number of deportees was not specified, the operation was carried out by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on October 22.
The DHS emphasized its ongoing commitment to working with the Indian government and other international partners to reduce irregular migration and combat human smuggling. The department enforces US immigration laws by swiftly returning individuals without a legal basis to remain in the country, while promoting lawful pathways for migration.
Since the implementation of the ‘Securing the Border Presidential Proclamation’ in June 2024, encounters at US southwest border ports have decreased by 55%. DHS has removed or returned over 160,000 individuals and conducted more than 495 international repatriation flights to over 145 countries, including India.
Kristie A. Canegallo, a senior DHS official, stated that Indian nationals without legal status are subject to swift removal and warned against believing smugglers’ false promises. The DHS uses charter removal flights to reduce irregular migration and hold criminal networks accountable.
In 2022-23, over 90,000 Indians entered the US illegally. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs conducts outreach activities to raise awareness about safe and legal migration, including Pre-Departure Orientation & Training (PDOT) to educate prospective workers about legal requirements and conditions abroad.
