US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin Talks About Troop Safety and Recent Airstrikes

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized the importance of American troop safety and discussed recent airstrikes in Iraq and Syria. Speaking to reporters, Austin mentioned that while recent attacks are connected to regional tensions, he does not foresee a surge in attacks.

Austin also addressed the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, stating he had no additional information. Haniyeh was killed in an attack in Iran’s capital, Tehran, while attending the swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian.

The US military conducted a defensive airstrike south of Baghdad, Iraq, targeting combatants preparing to launch one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems (OWAUAS). This airstrike was the first in Iraq since February and was deemed necessary to protect US and Coalition Forces.

US officials highlighted the commitment to self-defense, stating, “We maintain the inherent right to self-defense and will not hesitate to take appropriate action.”
