New Jersey [US], August 23: Bill Pascrell, a Democratic congressman from New Jersey who served in the House of Representatives since 1997, has passed away at the age of 87. His family announced his death on his X account, expressing their deep sadness and highlighting his dedication to his job and love for his city, Paterson.

US Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her condolences, calling Pascrell a ‘dedicated public servant and an unwavering force for good.’ She praised his efforts to improve the lives of his constituents and his advocacy for health care, the environment, and first responders.

Pascrell was hospitalized last month for a fever. He had a long career in public service, including roles in the New Jersey General Assembly and as the mayor of Paterson. In Congress, he represented New Jersey’s 8th and later the 9th district, and was a member of the House Ways and Means Committee. He secured significant federal funding for infrastructure improvements and was known for his passionate speeches, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Earlier this year, Pascrell faced a primary challenge from Prospect Park Mayor Mohamed Khairullah but won the Democratic primary. His district includes a diverse population, with significant Palestinian-American and Jewish communities.
