US Asks India to Use Special Partnership with Russia to Help End Ukraine War, Says Margaret MacLeod

The United States wants India to use its special partnership with Russia to put pressure on Moscow to stop the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and work for a durable peace in the region, according to US State Department Hindustani spokesperson, Margaret MacLeod.

MacLeod reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s famous quote, ‘This is not an era of war,’ which the PM had told Russian President Vladimir Putin during the SCO Summit in Bali in 2022. She emphasized that Russia’s actions in Ukraine are a violation of the UN Charter and international law.

MacLeod also discussed the ongoing NATO Summit in Washington DC, where the alliance aims to discuss the vision for the next 75 years and announce relief packages for Ukraine. She mentioned that the price cap on Russian crude oil has helped reduce Russia’s earnings, which are being used to fund the war in Ukraine.

Despite pressure from Western countries, India has continued to purchase crude oil from Russia under the price cap, which has helped keep domestic fuel prices stable. MacLeod highlighted the strong ties between the US and India and expressed a desire to further strengthen this relationship.

Prime Minister Modi visited the US in June last year, followed by President Joe Biden’s visit to India for the G20 Summit. The Quad Summit between the two nations is also expected to be held later this year in India.
