US and India Plan to Hold QUAD Summit This Year, Says Kurt Campbell

US Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell, announced on Wednesday that India and the US are determined to hold the QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) Summit this year. This announcement was made during an online briefing on the recently concluded India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET).

Key Discussions

Campbell highlighted that the issue of the QUAD was discussed between US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during Sullivan’s recent visit to India. Both sides expressed a strong determination to hold the QUAD Summit before the end of the year.

Meeting Details

US NSA Jake Sullivan and Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell were in India for a key meeting of the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET) in the national capital last week. The meeting was chaired by Indian NSA Ajit Doval and US NSA Jake Sullivan.

Background

Last year, it was announced that the QUAD Summit, initially planned for January, would be rescheduled for later in 2024 due to scheduling conflicts among the QUAD partners. The QUAD, consisting of India, Australia, the US, and Japan, aims to ensure a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. The forum was first formed in 2004 to coordinate relief operations after a tsunami and was later proposed as a formal group by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2007.
