US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, recently had a phone conversation with Argentina’s Defense Minister, Luis Petri. They emphasized the importance of the defense partnership between their countries. Secretary Austin expressed gratitude for Argentina joining the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, a coalition of about 50 nations focused on Ukraine’s security needs.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting a democratic and independent Ukraine capable of defending itself against Russian aggression. They also discussed Argentina’s interest in becoming a NATO Global Partner, its decision to join the Combined Maritime Forces in the Middle East, and its renewed participation in the State Partnership Program with the Georgia National Guard.

Secretary Austin thanked Minister Petri for hosting the upcoming XVI Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas in Mendoza, Argentina, from October 13-16, 2024. The two leaders agreed to continue engaging on the Western Hemisphere’s role in maintaining a rules-based world order.
